CWE Parent Run
For the past 26 years, Dr. Doug Hankes has led a three-mile running tour of campus with other Auburn University faculty and staff members for parents during each of the 12 Camp War Eagle sessions. Walkers are also encouraged to participate!
The run/walk occurs on the second morning of each Camp War Eagle 2024 session and starts at 6:00 am outside of the main entrance to the Auburn Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.

Hankes and his wife moved back to Auburn in 1998 when they both were hired by the university. The two met as undergraduates at Auburn University, and after being away for about 10 years, decided it was time to come back.
“When we got back on campus the counseling center was working with Camp War Eagle, and that’s when I talked to Mark Armstrong, the director of First Year Experience,” said Hankes. “At the time I think they had bus tours and walking tours, and I half-jokingly said to him, ‘What if we do a running tour.’ He said, ‘You can do it if you want but nobody’s ever going to show up.'”
So Hankes decided he would try it out, beginning what is now known as the Camp War Eagle Parent Run.
As described in the CWE Parent Schedule:
The Pace
The pace varies according to the group but count on a sweaty, solid effort. Those who want to run fast can do so. Those who want to start slow and taper off are very welcome too. Run with an Auburn University staff or faculty member, another parent, or by yourself. Nobody is too fast or too slow! Remember…..slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
