Psychiatric Services

To access psychiatric services through Student Counseling & Psychological Services (SCPS), Auburn University students must first receive a referral. Psychiatric appointments are available only to currently enrolled students who meet the referral criteria listed below. This process ensures that each student receives the most appropriate and coordinated care for their individual needs. Students who already have a psychiatry provider or medical provider prescribing medications should remain with that provider whenever possible.
The process of psychiatric treatment begins by scheduling an intake appointment with a SCPS counselor. The counselor will evaluate your symptoms by performing a background screening and assessing the results. It is up to your counselor to recommend psychiatric services if they are needed, however, they may also recommend:

Use the Zen Den

The Zen Den offers a variety of stress management resources including biofeedback, a robotic massage chair, light therapy (for Seasonal Affective Disorder), and more.

Hang out with the Therapy Dogs

Nessie, Rooster, Eve and Winston are the SCPS therapy dogs. They can be found in the waiting areas of both the Haley and AUMC locatons .

Access Drop-in Groups

Take advantage of one of our drop-in groups (e.g., Mindful Mondays, Overcoming Problematic Thinking, etc.). Check the website for the current offerings. They change every semester.

Anxiety Toolbox

Ask your intake counselor for their favorite stress and anxiety management resources (e.g., on-line relaxation recordings, mindfulness and meditation resources, deep breathing exercises, and apps etc.).

Solution-Focused Group Therapy

This workshop teaches you how to use tools and strengths that you already have in a way that is easy to implement in your life. The strategies can help with depressed mood, anxiety, relationship conflicts, low motivation, and the overall feeling that your life is not going the way you would like.

Referral Criteria:

  • By completing an initial intake appointment with SCPS
